Why Princess Hilda?
I have a love for underloved characters and series, and Final Fantasy II and 99% of it's characters fit that bill. Princess Hilda wasn't originally on my radar, but a few years ago I added her to my plans, wanting to do her in honour of a friend of mine. My friend Liliana (Cosplay.com) did the cosplay back in 2011, as FFII is one of her favourite games. Because of her I made Hilda, so this costume is actually dedicated to my friend. I also decided to issue myself an additional challenge in 2020 when I started to use as much stash as I could and buy as little as possible. Challenge met!
Construction:
Dress: The dress was made entirely out of the remaining fabric I had from making the bows for Sailor Mercury back in 2019, making my own pattern to fit the style of the cosplay. There are slits up both sides of the dress. The top of the dress is gathered under one small piece at the very top. I took an old necklace my parents had gifted me and sewed it to the very top to help hold the dress up. The triangles are hand painted, lace is sewn on by machine, and there are beads going the entire length of the hem.
Hip Scarves: The hip scarves are made with some scraps, simply hemmed for the most part. I used some vintage laces for the parts that hang down, and did my own beaded designs on each one. The scarves are sewn into one piece and close with two snap fasteners. I currently use the chest brooch from my old Dancer Kotori cosplay - the one I made is still a WIP.
Capes: The capes are made with the entirety of the scrap from their prior projects, appropriately the longer cape is made from the leftover of Amano Zorn (2016). The design on the inner cape is hand painted and the trim was machine sewn on. They attach into the pauldron with a snap fastener and pin around the beads of the necklace on the other.
Pauldron: The pauldron is made with L200 foam covered in Worbla. The horn/spike on the pauldron is made with Worbla Deco Art and melted directly onto the pauldron. The armour is painted by hand and given a dragonfly glaze over top. I used contact cement to secure all of the jewels in place. The pauldron secures in place with a wide elastic that slips over my shoulder. I intend to add more details in future.
Gloves: I made my own custom pattern for the gloves, using leftover fabric from Sailor Mercury. The gloves are fully lined. I hand sewed all of the lace and beads in place. The point secures with a small elastic that loops over my middle finger.
Headdress: The headdress was made using L200 foam, using a bowl to make the base of the pattern (the old cling flim and duck tape method). The main horns are made out of 2 cardboard tubes, cling film, craft foam, and Lumin's Workshop Foam Clay. The horns were spray painted and then covered in two kinds of ribbons I had in my stash. The middle horns were made of foam clay and completely covered in gold ribbon. Smallest horns and middle decoration still to be made. The entire headdress is covered in ribbons and lace to give my own kind of detailing. The central details are done with jewels and beads. There are strung beads hanging off both sides of the headdress.
