Why Dark Link?
After making normal Link for my friend Zandreth, I wanted to tackle making Dark Link for myself. A dark version of the hero? Yes please. I mostly based the costume off of Ocarina of Time, with some loose inspiration from a couple of the other games.
I made the tunic first. The tunic, hat, and shirt are all the same fabric. The tunic was a self drafted pattern, as was the hat. Everything is made to match my sizing and where everything should sit on Link.
The hat is a custom fit wind sock hat that I made the pattern for.
The shirt was modified from an existing pattern that I had. I sewed bias tape around the collar to finish the edge of the shirt. I plan to put lacing there at a later date.
I bought tights and boots for the first wearings.
Ears are from Aradani Costumes and custom coloured by me.
The sword was the truly challenging part. It was made in three pieces, the grip, hilt, and blade. Slots for the blade and grip were cut into the hilt. I shaped the end of the blade on the belt sander to get it to it's nice finished shape and point. Basic shaping on the grip was done with the belt sander as well. Details in the hilt were done with the dremel. Total time for detailing was about 15 hours. The pieces were glued together in one day using carpenters glue. A base coat of black spray paint was laid over the entire sword, and then I spray painted the blade. I painted over the hilt with more black and added highlights using some grey. Details on the blade were done using watered down black paint.
