Why Tamatoa?
Let's say I fell in love with him when watching the movie Moana. He was definitely one of my favourite parts of the movie, him and Te Ka & Te Fiti. Also he had in my opinion the best song in the entire movie, "SHINY". He was yet another villain where I had some room for interpretation given that he isn't human. Who needs to cosplay human characters anyway?
Wig is an Ombre from Arda Wigs Canada. I did nothing to this wig, it was perfect as is. I also plan to use it for another character.
Top: I used a dress pattern that I had for the top. I altered the bodice of it, which I had never done before and made it to work for what I wanted. I took out the straps that were part of the pattern and altered it to be gold ribbons instead. The ribbons are machine sewn. It does up in the back with snap fasteners. Gold coins were glued on over an hour. Chains were cut to equal lengths and hand sewn in place. I bought all the coins from Party City. The golden organza is machine sewn in place and fully hemmed.
Bottoms: I took a pair of my regular underwear as a base for the pattern and modified it as needed. There is an elastic in the top. The skirt is 3 tiers with alternating styles and lengths. There is over 160 plastic gold coins glued onto the bottom skirt. Chains are cut same way as the ones on the top and hand sewn in place.

Belt is a simple band of gold satin that does up in back with three snap fasteners.
Armour: Not worn on debut. Will fix for second wear. I used craft foam that I painted gold and added purple details to along the edges. They secure to my right leg and both arms with elastic. I painted some shells to fit with the armour and attached with glue.
Crown & Antenna: Not worn on debut. Need to redo for second wear. I didn't wear this on debut as the headband didn't fit over the wig. Oops. I will fix this for a future wear - if I can I will pull pieces off the headband and attach to something else as I liked the arrangement I had. Time will tell.
Peg leg: I took an old pair of flip flops I had from a few years ago and repurposed them. For the one for the peg leg, I added a foamcore top of a cone onto the end. I gave it some added structural support with craft foam. And put craft foam on the end. The leg part is spandex I had from an older costume and made it into a leg. In the con rush I forgot to add elastic to the top, but will add for future.
Fish Hook: I made the hook itself out of Sculpey and followed the baking instructions. I used suede cord wrapped around and glued the final parts in place. The other necklace was from Party City.
