Ultimecia - Final Fantasy VIII
Worn:
Anime North 2019 (Toronto, ON)
Status: Retired? Hiatus? TBD
Why Ultimecia?
More villains? More villains. She was supposed to debut with a group in 2013, but none of us got the costumes done. So, finally, this project is done! I started Ultimecia in the late winter/early spring of 2013, and unfortunately I did not finish her in time for initial debut date (Anime North of that year) due to some setbacks. And setbacks happened every single time I worked on this costume, dubbing Ultimecia my "cursed cosplay".
The dress is made of velvet that I bought during an amazing sale, and it is modified from a coat pattern (was a Simplicity pattern for the Matrix coat). Edges of the dress are sealed with mod podge. All of the feathers around the bottom and the collar are hot glued on. The gradient on the bottom was hand painted, as well as the purple on the sleeves.
The wings are floral wire, chicken wire, mesh, and feathers. They are slightly posable and are all one solid piece. They attach to the dress with two heavy duty snap fasteners. The wings are so light that using snap fasteners was actually the best and easiest way to do it!
The gloves are simple purple knit that are made to fit my hands.
The gold necklace is craft foam with jewelry wire and metal gold beads. The detailing on the necklace is done with hot glue and jewels. The second necklace is wire and beads. The earrings are simple fish hooks with wire with matching beads to the artworks and renderings.
The wig & horns were one of the craziest undertakings for her. The wig is a Westley in Silver from Arda Wigs Canada. I changed the part in the wig (originally it was more to the right) to the center, and styled the bangs. I sewed in wefts by hand to make the long parts of her hair that sit in front. The horns are mounted onto a headband that fits on top of the wig. This makes transportation and storage much easier. The horns are insulation foam board cut to shape, and covered in white felt. I used hot glue, white glue, and hair glue to secure the remainder of the pack of wefts onto the horns. The central red pieces, and end pink pieces on the horns are made of L200 foam from Cosplay Supplies, cut and heat shaped to what was needed and painted. The central gold piece is dollar store craft foam. The pink end pieces are removable. The purple "swirls" are made of wood and I shaped them using the belt sander and dremel, and painted them.
Photoshoot is forthcoming for the next time I wear her. After she has repairs... again.
