Why Vaporeon?
My second favourite Pokemon has always been Vaporeon. There is something about water & ice types! And blue >> Vaporeon is also my favourite eeveelution. I have wanted to do this costume for nine years now, ideas for interpretation changing over time. This ended up being one of my most expensive costumes despite the great savings I managed to get on each piece. But when you're ordering lots of materials, that tends to affect costs despite any discounts or sales. Or just generally lower prices.
Wig: I did nothing to my wig. It's a Luthien in Denim Blue from Arda Wigs Canada. It was a perfect fit for my costume!
Walk around top is made of stretch satin that I ordered from Fabric.com. All fabric for this costume is from there. I'm very happy with the quality. I modified the bodice part of a dress pattern that I bought years ago to work for this costume. Initial wear was strapless, will add white lace straps for future wear. Also will add beads. The pendant was from Fabricland and hand sewn in place. The frills on the top and walking skirt are leftover satin from Amano Kuja.
The walking skirt was a custom pattern I made myself and adjusted the fit accordingly. This was my first time making a mermaid skirt, and I'm glad I added some extra space near my knees to make walking even easier. The skirt does up in the back with a zipper. As an added personal detail there are dark blue beads going down the center back seam of the skirt. The skirt is pretty comfortable to move around in!
Fins & crown need a complete redo, but I was satisfied with my result for the first wearing of Vaporeon. I used simple craft foam for the fins and painted them the appropriate colours. They are hot glued onto the headband. I glued white pearls along the edge of the headband between the fins. As well there is a string of pearl beads draping across the back of the head for that extra mermaid princess touch.
Mermaid tail was fun to make. I had never made a mermaid tail of any sort before, and I was making my very first swimming one. I ordered a monofin off of ebay before starting anything else of the costume. I traced around my legs and the fin itself to create the pattern. I used Neoprene - the same material for scuba suits - to make the tail. It worked brilliantly! I sewed the tail together entirely, and once I had the fit perfect, I undid part of the seam near my ankles and at the fin and sewed in a zipper. The zipper makes it easier to take the monofin in and out and put my feet into it.
Feat. KassyPlay as Dewgong, Silent Shadow as Primarina, Victor as Feraligatr & my niece as herself
