This was quite the year! Not just in cosplay but also in my personal life. Actually, especially in my personal life. It was a big year with a lot of changes, a few goals reached and two of them being very long term ones.
I'll work month to month, covering what was going on and what I was making.
January
New Cosplay: Charlie Morningstar from Hazbin Hotel Reworn: Valentino from Hazbin Hotel Photoshoots: 2 - Full shoot with Open Shutter Photography, mini with Henrickson Convention: G-Anime I spent most of the month of January working on my cosplay of Charlie, getting her ready for competing in the masquerade at G-Anime in Gatineau that fell towards the end of the month. I learned a lot making her and I plan to do some adjustments to her (fit and shoulders). I learned more about suit making, another way to finish seams, wig styling, and doing pad stitching for collars and lapels. While I didn't win anything at G-Anime, I still had fun in the green room with everyone else who entered, gave actually one of my favourite stage performances, and got to see friends I normally wouldn't see. I also got to wear Valentino to a winter convention. You would think though that for a cosplay that's a fully lined faux leather coat with faux fur, I'd be able to function better. Nope. I over heated.
February
Convention: Con-G Geeks at Home 2023 I started on Asmodeus during this month, getting his jacket started mostly, but it took me many months with a decent sized gap in between starting and finishing before I finally wore him. However, I did enter into the Con-G online masquerade this year, using a TikTok that I filmed in 2020 in my parents' living room. To my surprise, this TikTok actually won an award in the masquerade - Artisan Division! The Just Say My Name Award - which I actually received a physical certificate and ribbon for! The TikTok was of my Pyramid Head cosplay that I made in 2019. You can go watch the winning video HERE
March & April
Updated Cosplay: Sailor Mercury from Sailor Moon Photoshoots: 2 - with Open Shutter Photography & Cyberfox007 Photography Convention: Cornwall and Area Pop Event Not much happened in these months individually, especially not March where much of the month was just working on Asmodeus. For a couple of days in April however, as I was attending CAPE for just the Saturday this year, for a big group, that I took the time to fix up and improve my Sailor Mercury cosplay I made in 2019. This was the first of my long term cosplay goals that was achieved this year, a full Sailor Scout group from Sailor Moon, and we were even on the front page of one of the local newspapers. It was so much fun getting to do this group with wonderful friends, old and new. I wouldn't trade that for anything in the world. I did two photoshoots that day, one solo with Cyberfox007, and then the big group one that was done with Open Shutter, where we also had a young Tuxedo Mask.
May
Reworn: Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children & Rainbow Asmodeus from Helluva Boss Convention: FanaticCon Brockville I was still slowly working on Asmodeus, intending him for competition in September. But I also had my first booth in literal years! Because I won at FanaticCon Brockville the previous year, I had the honour of having a booth space and judging this year's contest. It was really exciting to get to do that again and I'm glad I had the opportunity. I wore my cosplay of Cloud Strife to the convention and almost nobody recognized me from the previous year. What did help people recognizing me was that at my booth I had my cosplay of Valentino up on a mannequin, so I quite enjoyed the looks of realization on people's faces. It was an honour to judge along good friends Anniechie Designs and Aero Cosplay, and award this year's champion belt to Sandra Vee Cosplay! Very well deserved for her Battle Cinderella! A huge thank you again to my friend Anniechie and her partner Sam for letting myself and my partner stay at their home on Saturday night since we had to be at the venue super early. I also put on Rainbow Asmodeus to film Pride content for the month of June on TikTok! I had a lot of fun doing those.
June & July
So literally everything cosplay was put on hold during these two months. Real life took over. My partner and I got approved for our first apartment together and we had to move in June 17! We drove out to Whitby to my grandmother's to get the things that she was giving us - furniture, cutlery, pots, pans, other useful things - so that we weren't having a bare start in living together and didn't have as much to worry about. Very thankful to her for that! We got my partner Zandreth fully moved in that weekend, and I moved in a month later, as I needed to save up some money and give my proper notice to my previous job - which I honestly loved that job so it broke my heart to leave it. I moved to Ottawa on July 15, and I had a job interview on the 17. The 19 I was informed they were offering me the 6 month contract! I was so excited and I spent as much time as I could during that week unpacking and getting ready to start at my new job. I've gone from packing meat (2014-2020) to packing craft supplies (2020-2023), and now packing parachutes for aerospace recovery! It was some big changes! I was able to get back into sewing on Asmodeus at the end of the month to have him wearable so I could test out his cosplay at Otaktuhon.
August
New cosplay: Asmodeus from Helluva Boss (partial debut) Reworn: Lucifer Morningstar from Hazbin Hotel & Miya Chinen from Sk8 The Infinity Photoshoots: 1 - Hazbin Hotel group with Cyberfox007 Photography Convention: Otakuthon I managed to finish Asmodeus enough to be able to wear him to Otakuthon for a bit of a rest run. I was very happy for that and got photos with the small Helluva Boss group that was arranged for Friday. Saturday though was the big Hazbin Hotel group (photo above) and we had a photoshoot early Saturday morning with Cyberfox007. It was a lot of fun and very glad that I was able to be a part of it. I hope I can cosplay with them all (or even some of them) again! As soon as Otakuthon was over it was back to focusing on finishing Asmodeus. And I am SO proud of his cosplay!
September
New Cosplay: Asmodeus from Helluva Boss Reworn Cosplay: Thirst Ghostface from Scream, Santa Jack Skellington from Nightmare Before Christmas Convention: Ottawa Comic Con All the months of hard work paid off! I finished Asmodeus in time to wear him at Ottawa Comic Con on the Saturday with my friend @ashiecos as Fizzarolli and compete in the masquerade! And not only that, we also received 4 awards for the costumes! We received Honourable Mention Workmanship - Fabric Manipulation, Honourable Mention Performance - Balloon Shenanigans, Ninja Award - Easiest Cleanup, Best Silhouette. Us receiving Best Silhouette was the final push for both of us to enter into the Master Division! So as of Ottawa Comic Con I am officially in the Master Division, a long term cosplay goal that I have had since 2010. In addition to wearing Ozzie at Comic Con I also wore my thrist Ghostface and Santa Jack. Fun fact that I got my new tattoo on the Friday in Ghostface, so I was on stage with a slightly sore arm haha. With Asmodeus finished, and Comic Con done, I had to start sewing on my wedding dress.
October
New Cosplay: Ghostface from Scream Reworn Cosplay: Sam from Trick R Treat Photoshoots: 2 - both self done During October I was working on my dress for my wedding, and also my partner's coat and finishing everything for the wedding preparations. I didn't do much in October besides work on wedding things, and film TikToks as both Sam and Ghostface. I did however do the Haunted Walk with my partner and friends in full costume, and I wore Ghostface to work on Halloween.
November
New: Wedding dress, Alucard coat, bracelet, bouquet Event: MY WEDDING Honestly this was the highlight of my year. I have dreamed of getting married my whole life, and while this didn't match what I dreamed of as a kid, I am happier with this than what my original had been. I made my own wedding dress too! The fact that I managed to do that amazes me and I'm very thankful to my friend Anniechie Designs for her help with the final fitting and hemming of the dress - and for being one of my wonderful bridesmaids alongside my dear friend Strawbunny Cosplay! I took a month off sewing after my wedding. I kinda had to as I was very burnt out with all of the constant sewing from end of July to November 2, plus the wedding preparations. It was really good for me to do that.
December
New Cosplay: Dressy Kuja from Final Fantasy IX (inspired by fanart) Reworn Cosplay: Santa Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas Photoshoots: 1 mini one after Distant Worlds Event: Distant Worlds ~Music from Final Fantasy~ concert in Montreal I got back into sewing this month, working on my upgrades/updates for my Lucifer Morningstar from Hazbin Hotel so I can enter him into G-Anime 2024's masquerade. I also got to finally go to my dream concert at the start of this month with my friend Red Mage Cosplay and Photography! He bought me a ticket for my birthday and we made the drive down to Montreal to see it together! I'd wanted to go to this concert for 13 years and it was well worth the wait! Bonus I finally had an excuse to do this dressy version of Kuja based off a fanart I found years ago when I was planning my Dissidia cosplay of him. As a bonus in my personal life, the day before Christmas vacation, I was offered my full time contract for my job! I'm officially permanently hired by the company to pack parachutes for aerospace recovery! So it's been quite the busy year, and I'm excited to see what next year brings!
